BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers in Baghdad on Sunday, the military said, pushing the overall American death toll in the five-year war to at least 4,000. The grim milestone came on a day when at least 61 people were killed across the country.

As you may have already heard by now, the tree sit has been forcefully removed from the end of Leigh Rd. and the destruction of this sacred area has already begun.

Last night I went to sleep up in the first tree sit platform. We knew we were facing some kind of showdown this morning, but we assumed it was going to be another attempt by the city to survey. We thought maybe they would be accompanied by RCMP officers willing to arrest people for obstruction. read more »

Police arrested more than 100 Montreal students who barricaded themselves inside their college Tuesday night to protest tuition hikes.

Montreal police were called to post-secondary institution CEGEP Vieux-Montréal after student protesters ignored orders from officials to leave the premises.

Students built a towering barricade in front of the Ontario Street college with chairs, plywood, vending machines and a toilet. read more »

Thousands of workers have taken control of one of Egypt's biggest state-owned textile factories in a continuing protest over pay and work conditions.

The workers also want the head of the company to be sacked, and are demanding the release of five representatives who were detained by police on Monday.

The strike at the Misr Helwan Spinning and Weaving Company's factory in Mahalla al-Kubra began on Sunday. read more »

MADISON, Wis. — Students jammed into a University of Wisconsin-Madison building Thursday to disrupt Halliburton Co.'s attempt to recruit at a campus job fair.

Protesters angrily accused the company of profiting from the war in Iraq and sat in front of the company's booth to discourage students from meeting with its representatives.

They summoned the memory of a 1967 protest against recruiters for Dow Chemical Co., which made napalm used in Vietnam. A peaceful sit-in that ended in a bloody confrontation between students and club-wielding police officers galvanized the anti-war movement. read more »
