Police Attack Protest At Minnesota Sesquicentennial Event

ST. PAUL (WCCO ) During the Minnesota Sesquicentennial celebration in St. Paul, a protest by a couple dozen American Indians carrying nooses turned violent.

A protester hit a Minnesota State Trooper on the head as police tried to clear the area at the state capitol. Police arrested at least three people for disorderly conduct.

Demonstrators want the state of Minnesota to apologize for breaking Indian treaties and removing Indians from the land.  read more »

One dead at Afghan demo against US-led soldiers

MARCO, Afghanistan (AFP) - At least one person was killed and several wounded in Afghanistan Saturday when police opened fire to disperse a protest accusing US-led soldiers of killing civilians, witnesses said.

The clash erupted in the eastern province of Nangarhar as demonstrators tried to block a road to demonstrate against the killing of three men in a military operation overnight, witnesses said.  read more »

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton and dozens of others were arrested on Wednesday for stopping traffic to protest the acquittal of policemen who killed an unarmed black man with 50 shots on his wedding day.

Reports: Estimated 2,000 Protest Against US Radar Near Planned Site In Czech Republic

On Saturday, police spokeswoman Ilona Tymlova said that an estimated 2 thousand people gathered in a Czech village to protest against the placing a US missile shield base in a nearby military zone, according to reports. The protesters then marched in rain from Misov, southwest of Prague, to the limits of the Brdy military zone in what was one of the largest protests against the US radar.

The Czech Defence Ministry said that Czech and US negotiators are likely to wrap up missile defence talks next week. The Czech-US agreement requires approval in parliament where the centre-right ruling coalition so far lacks clear support for the project.  read more »

Thousands of workers protest in Croatia for higher wages

Sat, 12 Apr 2008 Earth Times Zagreb - Over 40,000 workers from all over Croatia took part in Zagreb Saturday in a mass protest calling for higher wages to keep pace with the rising cost of living. Despite very heavy rain and low temperatures, the demonstration - under the banner "together for higher wages" - turned out to be the biggest such event of its kind in over a decade, Croatian HRT television reported.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - U.N. peacekeepers fired rubber bullets and tear gas into a crowd that gathered outside the presidential palace Tuesday during the second consecutive day of protests over soaring food prices.
