Friends of the Waterfront is a group of Olympia Area residents and businesspeople who see the Olympia waterfront as a community treasure -- a central feature that is vital to the health of the whole community.

We advocate managing the waterfront area, the land within 600 feet of the water, wisely. It should be developed for the benefit of the entire community, not for the benefit of limited interests.

Doing that well requires managing it according to the community's vision, as determined by a process that includes all elements of the community.

Thousands of workers protest in Croatia for higher wages

Sat, 12 Apr 2008 Earth Times Zagreb - Over 40,000 workers from all over Croatia took part in Zagreb Saturday in a mass protest calling for higher wages to keep pace with the rising cost of living. Despite very heavy rain and low temperatures, the demonstration - under the banner "together for higher wages" - turned out to be the biggest such event of its kind in over a decade, Croatian HRT television reported.

The peaceful demonstration cheered trade union leader Kresimir Sever's declaration that "Croatia is split - there are a few super- rich people, and countless poor."  read more »

Food protests strike Haitian capital

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - U.N. peacekeepers fired rubber bullets and tear gas into a crowd that gathered outside the presidential palace Tuesday during the second consecutive day of protests over soaring food prices.

Fritz Longchamp, chief of staff to President Rene Preval, said some protesters were trying to break down the palace gates before the U.N. troops moved to establish a security perimeter around the building.  read more »

Italy: Women protest in major cities to defend abortion rights

Rome, 14 Feb.(AKI) - Thousands of women were expected to protest to defend abortion rights in nationwide rallies being held in major Italian cities late on Thursday.

The protests followed a raid by police on a hospital in the southern city of Naples earlier this week, on what was thought to be an illegal abortion.

Rallies were being held in Rome, Milan, Bologna and Naples and Italian Health Minister Livia Turco was expected to attend one of them.  read more »

UCSB Protest Leads to Arrests

Hundreds of students, faculty, and veterans led an anti-war protest for several hours on campus today. Students say the aim was to stop a conference where university researchers were meeting with army officials to discuss ideas to improve materials used by the military.

The anti-war rally quickly turned into an anti-arrest rally when two protesters were arrested for delaying an officer. Authorities say these protesters were not students.  read more »
