Montreal police quell student protest

Police arrested more than 100 Montreal students who barricaded themselves inside their college Tuesday night to protest tuition hikes.

Montreal police were called to post-secondary institution CEGEP Vieux-Montréal after student protesters ignored orders from officials to leave the premises.

Students built a towering barricade in front of the Ontario Street college with chairs, plywood, vending machines and a toilet.

Officers arrested 102 students, who were booked and later released. They face several charges, including public mischief, assault and battery and armed assault.

No one was injured during the overnight protest, but police said the CEGEP's property was damaged.

CEGEPS and university students are planning widespread protests across the province this week to protest a tuition increase.

Montreal's Dawson College is also taking part in the strikes.

Students in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke plan to take part in the three-day strike.

Education Minister Michelle Courchesne said the $50-a-semester tuition increase is non-negotiable.
